The Momentum Group adds maximum value with the opening of Gravity MAX and M&S in Liverpool ONE

The Momentum Group achieved two of its most significant milestones this month with the opening of Gravity MAX and the new M&S store in Liverpool ONE.  With the help of the Momentum team, Grosvenor and the brands have transformed the former Debenhams store to create a new frame of reference for the repurposing of department stores in city centres and retail destinations across the UK.

Momentum Advise acted as client project manager and Momentum Build as principal contractor for Grosvenor, spending almost 12 months repurposing the store in preparation for Gravity MAX and M&S to begin their fit-outs.

Momentum Advise provided retail delivery services to Grosvenor to monitor both brands’ design and fit-out, ensuring excellence of design and delivery to maximise the opportunities for each to showcase their respective offers in an innovative and forward-looking environment. The coordination of two principal contractors, with at peak times, more than  600 operatives working on the two fit-outs and logistics management represents a considerable achievement.

Momentum Build were the principal contractor for Gravity MAX providing design, cost and construction management services, enabling a seamless transition and ensuring that programme opportunities were maximised across the landlord shell works and tenant fit-out programmes.

Prior to M&S and Gravity MAX taking access, Momentum Build repurposed the former department store. Works commenced with the removal of mannequins coat hangers and fixtures and fittings and then the removal of lifts and escalators. The atrium was infilled with a new concrete slab to form the two new demises and the building services reconfigured to form common parts to enable both brands to take occupation.

Chris Renshaw, The Momentum Group’s co-founder and director, said:

“Gravity MAX and M&S are milestone moments for The Momentum Group, Liverpool ONE and the city.  Both are a significant investment that not only represents a huge vote of confidence in ‘Destination Liverpool’, but also come as Liverpool ONE prepares to celebrate its 15th birthday and the role it has played in transforming Liverpool city centre.

“Because of their size, Gravity MAX and M&S have been challenging projects, but hugely rewarding and thrilling for our team.  They also underline our growing credentials and expertise as the go-to team to repurpose former large retail spaces to deliver something spectacular that breathes new life into empty units.”

Harvey Jenkinson, co-founder and CEO of Gravity, added:

“Gravity MAX was no small undertaking and we needed to work with a company that could offer a full suite of services. The Momentum Group’s undoubted experience in retail design and construction, its attention to detail, the depth of its local knowledge and agile approach was key in this development.  We have benefited from the team’s expertise enormously and are delighted with the result.”

Such has been the success of The Momentum Group’s work with Gravity that the company has been appointed to deliver the brand’s next Gravity MAX, in Westfield Stratford in London.
