As a B Corp for just over a year, we are celebrating our second B Corp month. Last year, the focus of the month was to improve the Team’s knowledge of the accreditation. This year, we’re speaking to other organisations across the Liverpool City Region about why B Corp matters, particularly within the property and built environment sector, and how we can encourage more local businesses to become involved in the B Corp movement.

First up is Karl Clawley, Associate Director, whose role includes Momentum Contribute, reflecting on our own journey.

⭐ What originally motivated The Momentum Group to become a B Corp?
For us, the motivation came from something that has been embedded in the business since the very beginning – the belief that a company should have a positive impact on the communities it works in, the people it employs and the environment around it. Through Momentum Contribute, we had already built our approach around people, place, planet, and professionalism, so B Corp felt like a natural next step. It gave us an internationally recognised framework to measure ourselves against and, importantly, to hold ourselves accountable. It’s one thing to say you want to be a responsible business, but B Corp challenges you to evidence it against rigorous external standards and continually improve.

⭐ What impact has B Corp had on The Momentum Group since achieving it?
I think being a B Corp-accredited business creates an expectation for new clients, suppliers or team members. When someone begins working with or for us, they already know a bit about who we are and what we expect from them. Being a B Corp, they know we will have high standards.

B Corp has also opened doors with new suppliers and partners. We have definitely benefited from networking and working with other B Corps. It has also strengthened conversations with clients and partners who increasingly want to work with organisations that share those values. Finally, it keeps us sharp. We can’t let our standards slip, as we definitely want to maintain the accreditation.

⭐ What advice would you give to a business starting out in its B Corp journey?
The biggest piece of advice would be to view it as a journey rather than a destination. The process is very detailed and sometimes challenging, but that’s also what makes it valuable. It encourages you to step back and look honestly at how your business operates and where you can improve. My other advice would be to involve your team. B Corp works best when it becomes part of the culture of the organisation rather than just a certification exercise. Ultimately, it’s not about being perfect; it’s about committing to doing better and continuously improving the impact your business has.
